“There are only so many independent bookstores I can get my book into, and only so many places in the area where I can speak. I had to try something new to get more readers,” author Janice Detrie says, explaining why she decided to try a free Kindle Countdown Deal recently.
Janice is the author of the Gaston the Poodle cozy mystery series. She has written three books in the series so far (The Seven Ten Split, A Glint in her Ice, and Murder is as Easy as Pie) and is working on the fourth book which will published in the summer of 2023. Janice lives in Wisconsin and has developed a rapport with her local independent bookstore and has also been able to place her book in at least two other stores in Madison, WI. She also speaks at libraries and book clubs.
She recently did some research on Kindle Countdown Deals and decided it was the next thing to try. Janice decided to make the third book in her series free for one week. “I feel that is my best writing, so I wanted to introduce people to the series with it,” she explains. Since each of her books is a stand-alone story, starting in the middle of the series is not a problem. Of course, the hope is that people will read the free book and be so intrigued by the characters they will go on to read the others in the series.
Janice researched some of the book promotion sites and decided that right now Fussy Library has the best track record right now. She set her promotion up and ran the ad for one day only.
Her results were great. The first day she saw an increase in downloads, and they built each day during the five-day free period. At the end of the deal period she had over 3,000 downloads and her ebook was sitting at Number 8 in Cozy Animal Mysteries and number 154 in the overall Best Seller Rank Kindle Free Books. That’s the one with which I’m most impressed. That means of all the books listed free on Amazon that day, in any genre, Murder is as Easy as Pie was listed in the top 200. When you think of how many thousands of books she was competing with, that’s impressive!
Janice is going to try some more promotions in the next few months, trying the .99 cent option as well as promoting the other books in the series.
