What My Class Reunion Taught Me About Social Media

I recently attended my high school class reunion. It wasn’t the place where I expected to learn a valuable lesson about social media. I have to admit most people don’t think that people my age pay much attention to social media. And that’s the first lesson I learned.

Don’t count people over 50 or even 60 when you are planning your social media campaign.

That’s because they are looking and listening. That brings me to lesson two:

You probably have silent followers you don’t even know exist.

I was amazed at the number of people who came up to me and said they enjoyed my posts. They just don’t hit the “like” button very often. And that’s okay. They are noticing, and at some point, when they are ready to buy your book or tell someone else about it, they’ll remember that post.

Not everyone who talked about my posts mentioned what I write about book publishing and marketing, and that’s lesson three.

Posting about a variety of things brings them to the attention of more people.

Some people mentioned the photos and videos of my cats, others my garden, still others my Miami history posts, and yes, others liked what I post about book editing, and the authors I work with.

So shout out to the North Miami Class of ’74! Not only was it a great time, I learned a lot.
